A 19-year-old Oregon man who was intoxicated on Four Loko killed a teen passenger while recklessly driving with the victim in the car. According to police and prosecutors, the accused was allegedly driving at a speed of 76mph on a 35 mph zone in Oregon before crashing into a pole.
Oscar Regis allegedly drove at 99mph before crashing into a pole.
The accused, identified as Oscar Regis, allegedly went on a rampage that included driving 99mph, threatening a motorist at a red light with a gun, and drinking cans of Four Loko while behind the wheel. A probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime said Regis split lanes and passed other vehicles in a Chevrolet Malibu before slamming into a large light pole.
Extent of Damage
Jackson Grenfell, whom Regis met earlier on March 2, was seated in the backseat of the car. Grenfell suffered fatal injuries in the crash. He was intubated and likely had a brain bleed before he succumbed to the injuries at a local hospital, according to the affidavit.
A teenage girl who was sitting in the backseat with Grenfell suffered a cheekbone fracture that required surgery. She also suffered several facial fractures, a broken spine, and a concussion. Surgeons installed metal plates in her face. The girl’s mother testified, “These injuries are going to be lifelong,” at a detention hearing for Regis.
Court Proceedings
Regis was 19 at the time of the crash in Hillsboro and is now 20. A judge ordered him held without bond, pending trial. Regis faces numerous charges, including manslaughter, assault, driving under the influence, and recklessly endangering other people.
A detective, who testified in court, recalled a conversation he had with Regis after the crash. “What have I done?” Regis said, according to the detective. “He then recalled that his father had warned him of something like this happening if he continued his behaviour,” the detective recalled to The Oregonian.
Regis did not suffer injuries in the crash and allegedly fled the scene on foot, police said. He was wearing a “black and white letterman jacket” that had blood on the right elbow when cops found him, according to the affidavit.
