New York’s Nassau County Police Department on Wednesday arrested a 37-year-old man for attacking his elderly mother. John Strano, according to prosecutors, was accused of beating and assaulting his 75-year-old mother during an argument inside their home, located in a Long Island neighborhood.
Prosecutors argued that John reportedly tried to choke his mother to death and even yelled “Why aren't you dying?” at her. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the woman injured. She revealed that her son suddenly became violent during an argument.
He pushed her to the ground and then slammed her head with a blunt object made of metal. Afterward, Strano tried to choke his mother, during which she lost consciousness. He then fled the scene.
According to a News 12 report, the investigators later discovered that the object John used to hit his mother was a metal clamp. During the court hearing, prosecutors revealed that John hit his mother about three dozen times on the back of her head using the clamp. Later, after his arrest, John admitted yelling at his mother with the words “Why aren't you dying?” and “Why are you still breathing?”
After allegedly attempting to murder his mother, John Strano tried to flee the scene. However, he was later located by investigators nearly a mile from his home. He was found inside Center Street Elementary School and was taken into custody on a baseball field, hours after students were dismissed for the day.
Authorities said John was arrested without incident and taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Several witnesses said the incident prompted an area-wide shutdown of Broad Street for several hours. Dozens of officers were deployed to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, the 75-year-old unidentified woman was admitted to another area hospital. Sources said she is stable and recovering from her injuries. Prosecutors added that the victim had a severely swollen face and head after the attack. She suffered serious lacerations and had also lost consciousness.
Regarding the charges, John Strano has been charged with second-degree attempted murder. He also faces two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities said John pleaded not guilty in court and was remanded in custody.
In response to the incident of domestic assault, the Herricks School District issued a brief statement. In a statement to News 12, officials said they were “aware of the situation, but have no comment."
The reason behind the argument between John Strano and his mother has not been revealed. Investigators are also likely to look into additional details, including possible motives behind the incident. Authorities may also review Strano’s prior criminal record.
