More Than Three Decades After Woman Was Assaulted And Killed, A Suspect Has Been Arrested

More than three decades after a woman was sexually assaulted and killed, an arrest has been made in the cold-case police said.
On Nov. 7, 1988, Betty Rolf was found dead under West Spencer Street in Appleton, Wisconsin, according to the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office. She was sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled.
Her case remained unsolved for 34 years and went cold.

That was until Dec. 7, 2022, when sheriff’s deputies announced they arrested a Washington man in connection to the case. Investigators did not detail how they identified the suspect.
Gene Meyer, 66, was arrested in Washington and awaiting extradition to Wisconsin, authorities said. He faces sexual assault and murder charges.
He lives in Wisconsin but is a former Wisconsin resident.
