Wisconsin woman kills one in drunken crash after driving wrong-way on highway, cops say

A Wisconsin woman is accused of driving drunk down the highway, crashing head-on into a vehicle and killing one person, police say.

On Oct. 3, authorities said 41-year-old Carrie J. Herbst was driving eastbound on I-94 when she got off at the Three Bears Lodge exit near Warren, Wisconsin.

Herbst got back on the highway but entered up the exit ramp and proceeded to drive west in the eastbound lanes for about one mile, officials said.

That is when she hit another vehicle head-on, which caused a multi-vehicle crash, WEAU reported.

Police stated three other people were seriously injured from the other vehicles and one of the victims later died.

Herbst was taken to a hospital in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and an investigation led to her arrest for OWI. A blood sample was taken, but the results of her blood alcohol content.

Police reported an open alcohol container was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle Herbst was driving.

Herbst was charged with first-degree reckless homicide, homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, first-degree reckless injury, injury for intoxicated use of a vehicle, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, officials said.
