On November 6, 2024, police were called to a home in Leesville, 110 miles south of Shreveport. The call was about an unresponsive child, who turned out to be Athena Miller, 4. She was rushed to a local hospital and then to a trauma center. However, she died the next day from blunt force trauma to the head.
Courtroom report stated that the girl died from “cardiopulmonary arrest, intracranial bilateral hemorrhaging, and non-accidental injuries from child abuse.” Dr. Jennifer Rodriguez, a child-abuse specialist pediatrician, told the court that the girl suffered from bruises, lacerations, burns, and abrasions from head to toe. She noted that the injuries on Athena were clearly inflicted and not from an accident.
“I have not had many cases where it took me a while to be okay days after,” she told jurors, according to KPLC.
Gray Has Also Been Charged With Abusing Athena’s Brother
According to the court documents, Athena and her brother came to live with Gray just a few months before the tragic incident unfolded. Prosecutor Lea Hall told the court that Gray “hated Athena.” Hall showed the court the horrific injuries the little girl suffered. She also called Gray “despicable” and a “child abusing b—.”
However, the defense attorney argued that there was no evidence that proved that Gray inflicted the abuse on Athena. In response, the prosecutor said, “Terrie Gray never said 'I hated those children,' but she sure showed it."
The father, Logan Miller, has been confirmed as his girlfriend’s accomplice. He has been charged with abuse. His trial will begin in October. Athena’s obituary said that her brother was like her best friend. She was a “loving child who enjoyed playing outside and sitting in her Mommy’s lap.”
The obituary added, “Athena loved playing with her baby dolls and her brother, Salem, wasn't only her brother — he was her best friend too.”
