A shooting at a baby shower in Detroit resulted in the death of a 53-year-old woman following an argument with the suspect that centered around the victim’s son, according to authorities.
On Oct. 15, the suspect, whose identity was not revealed, attended a baby shower in a Detroit home even though she was never invited, WXYZ-TV reported.
The uninvited guest and another woman got into an argument during which the victim, identified as Phebe Williams, allegedly hit the suspect. The suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Williams, WXYZ-TV reported.
Williams’ niece spoke with WXYZ-TV and said the suspect is a “friend of the family” and Williams and the suspect had been close friends since childhood.
The argument reportedly stemmed from the suspect claiming Williams’ son was involved in a crime, which she reported to the Detroit Police on Oct. 13.
After the shooting occurred, the suspect called the Detroit Police, admitted what she had done and drove to a nearby precinct, WXYZ-TV reported.
The suspect was in the precinct parking lot when she exited her vehicle and was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Williams’ son, who followed her from the baby shower, WXYZ-TV reported.
Both the suspect and Williams’ son were taken into custody, officials said.

Relatives of the suspect believe the fatal shooting is a case of self-defense, according to WXYZ-TV.
Meanwhile, Williams’ niece told WXYZ-TV, "Y’all could have just fought. You didn’t have to pull a gun. There’s kids in the house. It’s a lot of people in the house, so why would you pull out a gun?"
