A YouTuber who sneaked onto a restricted island to contact an isolated tribe is in judicial custody in India. In March 2025, Arizona native Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov arrived on North Sentinel Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India.

His goal was to meet the indigenous Sentinelese people on the island, who have largely avoided contact with the outside world for centuries. The tribe is known for being reclusive and often attacks anyone who comes close to their island.

Thus, it is prohibited for tourists to visit the island, and people are not allowed to travel within three miles of it. However, Polyakov reached North Sentinel Island in a small inflatable boat powered by an outboard motor. He allegedly conducted research into sea conditions and the positions of the local coast guard to avoid detection.

Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov wanted to shoot a YouTube video on the North Sentinel Island.

Polyakov wanted to contact the Sentinelese for a YouTube video. Upon setting foot on the island, he whistled to draw the attention of the tribal people. However, nobody responded to the whistle. Polyakov returned after spending an hour on the island and left a Diet Coke and a coconut as offerings for the Sentinelese.

Local authorities learned of the development after fishermen spotted Polyakov. Two days after his visit, Polyakov was detained and brought to Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

According to Indian laws, he was charged with entering a prohibited tribal reserve area without authorization. Polyakov remains in judicial custody after being denied bail in April. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 29. If convicted, he could receive a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Polyakov has over 6,400 subscribers on his YouTube channel named Neo-Orientalist. In his videos, he is often seen visiting dangerous places, including restricted areas in Afghanistan, which is now under the Taliban’s control.

The YouTuber had been obsessed with North Sentinel Island for months before he actually reached there. He first tried to reach the island using an inflatable kayak in October 2024 and again in January 2025. However, both attempts proved unsuccessful.

Experts warn against contacting the Sentinelese.

Meanwhile, experts have warned against such stunts, asserting that contacting the Sentinelese people could endanger multiple lives. Following Polyakov’s arrest, Survival International, a human rights group dedicated to indigenous and tribal people, called out the YouTuber.

“It beggars belief that someone could be that reckless and idiotic. This person’s actions not only endangered his own life, they put the lives of the entire Sentinelese tribe at risk. It’s very well known by now that uncontacted peoples have no immunity to common outside diseases like flu or measles, which could completely wipe them out,” Survival International’s Director Caroline Pearce said.

Pearce also pointed out that in 2018, American missionary John Allen Chau was killed after illegally landing on the island.
