7-Year-Old Fatally Shot by Another Child in North Texas Home; Man Taken Into Custody

A man has been taken into custody in connection with a child’s death. According to authorities, the child was shot by another child who gained access to a firearm. Details about the incident were shared by the Ferris Department of Public Safety (DPS).
According to authorities, it was an isolated incident that occurred in the Shaw Creek area near Tidwell in North Texas.

Takievon Holmes, 24, has been arrested in connection with the incident. Holmes has been charged with tampering with physical evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm. As investigators continue to examine the case, he could face additional charges.
According to the Ferris Department of Public Safety, Holmes left the scene after the shooting. A young child gained access to his gun inside the home, which led to the shooting. The victim, who remains unnamed, died from suffering a fatal gunshot wound. Although the identity of the victim has not been revealed, the child was confirmed to be seven-year-old.
Apart from Ferris DPS, the Texas Rangers, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and Ellis County District Attorney's Office are also working on the case. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged households to ensure firearms stay out of the reach of children.
Takievon Holmes reportedly left the home after the shooting incident.
Following the incident, Deputy City Manager John DeLeon said, “Our officers and first responders responded to an incredibly difficult scene, and they have continued to work carefully with our state, county, and prosecutorial partners.”
“This investigation will continue to be handled with attention to the facts, respect for the family, and a commitment to making sure the case is developed appropriately,” DeLeon said.
In a Facebook post, Ferris DPS shared, “Our hearts are with the child, the family, and everyone impacted by this devastating loss. We are grateful for the professionalism, coordination, and care shown by Ferris DPS, our first responders, and our partner agencies."
