The Alabama cops were caught on camera as they were dragging the body of a Black man to their police car. The man was later pronounced dead by the police. Several witnesses to the incident have come forward and raised questions regarding the in-custody death of the man, who was seen alive as he was being dragged to the police car.
The 35-year-old man was allegedly dragged from a wooded area into the patrol car.
A 35-year-old Black man was pronounced dead by the Alabama police after officers were caught on camera dragging him to the police car. Several witnesses of the incident believe that the 35-year-old Black man, identified as Ammarin Tunstal, died after Alabama police chased him into a wooded area where officers repeatedly tasered and pepper-sprayed him. The Black man pleaded for help until he went silent, according to reports from Atlanta Black Star.
The witness videos show Monroeville police officers dragging Tunstall’s limp body from the wooded area to a police car as one of the officers tells him to “act like a grown-a-- man.”
According to authorities, he was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where officers said they administered Narcan, a life-saving nasal spray used on people who have overdosed on opioids. Police said they then transported Tunstall to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
However, the issue was addressed three days after the incident occurred, according to reports from Atlanta Black Star.
Monroeville Police addressed the issue publicly via a post on their Facebook page, stating that officers received a call “in reference to a domestic situation.” They also that the victim had an outstanding warrant.
Police further stated that they spotted Tunstall walking, and he fled into a wooded area but was eventually taken into custody “without incident.” Authorities, however, did not acknowledge allegations that officers pepper-sprayed or tasered him. The press release also stated that officers were dragging Tunstall because he refused to walk.
However, the Monroeville Police Department has not confirmed whether the arrest was captured on body camera or dashcam footage.
Tunstall’s cousin, Selena Thomas, said she witnessed the officers dragging him from the wooden area and tried to help him. “He was on his knees, and I asked the officers if I could speak with him: they told me no,” Thomas said while talking to local media. “I asked if I could give him my number, but they told me no. I called his name, and he didn’t respond. They threw him in the back of the police car face down,” Thomas added.
The incident is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigations, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which issued a vague press release stating that Tunstall’s body was released to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, which will conduct an autopsy.
