Hikers who came across the scene have described what they saw. One hiker said a man at the site told them he was Shield’s friend. He claimed she had gone to clean herself in the river around 10:30 a.m. When she did not return, he went looking for her. Later, he found her face down in the water.
Another hiker said Shields looked pale with marks on her neck. He also said a firefighter confirmed a large wound on her head when the body was examined. The hikers quickly alerted park officials and the sheriff’s office. Rescue teams later recovered the body with help from air support.
As the investigation continues, Shield’s best friend, Garrett Mail, shared an emotional message online. He said her death had left him devastated. “I honestly don’t have words for how devastating this is to me. Joanna literally formed who I am today as a person,” he said.

Mail described Shields as a strong and caring influence in his life. He said she taught him patience, love, and how to see the good in every situation. He also recalled how she encouraged him to take chances, even pushing him to ask out his future wife.
He said they shared many adventures over the years. Even simple moments felt special when she was around. “She could make the most inane, dull or intense situations that much better, just because she was around,” he added.
Mail also revealed that Shields had been planning to start a podcast. He said she wanted to help others by sharing ideas close to her heart. “She was about to do something great,” he shared.
Meanwhile, a fundraiser has been set up to support her family. It has raised nearly $13000. The funds will help cover funeral and travel costs.
