Authorities Await Results as ‘Suspicious’ Case Remains Unsolved
Group of friends discover a woman's body en route a hike.
The body was first spotted on April 9 by a group of hikers returning from a two-night backcountry trip in Los Padres National Forest. The men quickly reported the discovery, prompting a complex response from multiple agencies. Because of rough terrain and poor weather, deputies had difficulty reaching the site. The body was recovered the following day.
The hikers described the scene when they found the body. “I didn’t see blood. She was pale. She had markings around her neck,” Gabe Holmes said. He added that a firefighter later noticed a large head wound after moving her jacket. “I don’t want to say choking marks,” Holmes said, but highlighted that her injuries raised concerns.
“That’s all I could think about is just how their family and friends will feel losing a loved one like that. I know it’s supposed to be a trip out in nature to escape everything and get away from all the horrible things in the world, and that happens,” Jack Cileo, another hiker, said.
The group also encountered a man nearby who claimed to be the woman’s friend. He appeared shaken and older, the hikers said. According to their account, the man told them that Shield had gone to the river earlier that morning.
“She went to the bathroom. She was clearing herself off in the river around 10:30 a.m., “ Luke Heerema said, recalling the man's account. The man said he later found her naked and face down in the water.

Investigators have not confirmed that detail. Officials have also not said whether the man is a witness or a possible suspect in the case.
Commander Andres Roasa said no one is currently in custody and confirmed that the case remains under investigation.
The remote location, known for its scenic trails and hot springs, is popular with hikers but difficult to access. Authorities have not released further details about the timeline leading up to Shield’s death.
Officials are urging patience as forensic results are processed because they will be key to determining what happened.
