The defense attorney representing the man charged in the killing of Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, recently argued prosecutors were improperly linking her client’s actions to political violence. The attorney said attempts to connect the 27-year-old’s actions to the recent episodes of political violence reported across the U.S. were prejudiced.

For the unversed, Mangione was indicted on 11 New York state charges as well as four federal charges. These charges include first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and criminal possession of a weapon.

Luigi Mangione’s Attorney Claims He Condones Violent Actions

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo dismissed attempts to link her client, Mangione, to any of the recent political violence incidents. She claimed that her client does not support violence of any kind or condone such incidents, past or present.

She stated, “As we have stated before in multiple public court filings, Mr Mangione does not support violent actions and does not condone past or future political violence. These repeated attempts to connect him to unrelated acts or to insinuate that he condones or supports these acts are irresponsible, dangerous and prejudicial.”

These recent statements by Mangione’s defense attorney came after a request for comment from Fox News. The news outlet asked about comparisons between the recent, unrelated shooting that took place at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and the fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO..

Luigi Mangione’s Case Previously Tagged As Leftist Violence

This is not the first time the ongoing case involving Mangione has been linked to an unrelated shooting incident. For example, in September 2025, the 27-year-old was mentioned by the White House in a press release. The document detailed various instances of Radical Leftist violence, and the killing of Brian Thompson was seemingly included as one such example.

At the time, Mangione’s lawyers had also condemned the apparent comparison. They stated that the press release was simply part of a greater political narrative. It did not establish any link to the ongoing criminal case.

Luigi Mangione’s Case In Brian Thompson’s Murder So Far

The CEO of the reputed American healthcare company, Thompson, was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan, NYC, on December 4, 2024. The shooting occurred in the morning hours, right outside the entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. The shooter fled the scene right after and was described as a white man wearing a mask.

The cases of the bullets fired at the CEO reportedly had etched three distinct words. These words were ‘delay’, ‘deny’ and ‘depose’. It could be linked to the criticism Thompson faced previously, over claims that his company was rejecting insurance claims.

In the meantime, the suspect, Mangione, was arrested elsewhere in Pennsylvania, almost five days later. Thereafter, he was charged with murdering Thompson by a Manhattan court. Mangione had pleaded not guilty to all the federal and state charges against him.

Fast forward to now, the suspect’s state murder trial is expected to start on June 8 and is believed to last for about four to six weeks. On the other hand, his federal trial has been rescheduled from September to October 2026. If convicted in either of the cases, Mangione can face life in prison.
