A carjacking in Mexico was captured live on camera during a television report. The victim, identified as a Mexican sports journalist, was allegedly held at gunpoint and ordered to leave the vehicle immediately.

The incident occurred at a gas station in Morelos on May 20. Authorities said the suspect was a masked gunman armed with a weapon, while the victim attempted to remain calm during the confrontation. Because the incident was extensively captured on video, investigators may have a stronger chance of identifying the suspect through the footage.

Mexican Sports Journalist Carjacked On Live Television

Fernando Vargas was reporting live during an interview on the show Bla, bla, bla deportivo for the Mexican sports station Activo Deportes in his car. The journalist was interrupted mid-sentence, talking about basketball playoffs, by a masked man. The intruder simply opened the driver’s side of the door, leaving Vargas shocked.

As the journalist tried to remain calm, the masked man immediately chambered a round in his gun and demanded that Vargas give up all his valuable belongings. Speaking in Spanish, he ordered, “The key, quick. Key, phones and wallets, quick.” As the carjacking continued to be recorded live, it left the show’s presenter, Ed Martinez, completely helpless as he looked on.

As the video progressed, Vargas could be seen trying to grab everything around him. At last, he took away his phone and stepped out of the car. It apparently seemed that the carjacker wasn’t aware that the whole ordeal was getting recorded, and he appeared unbothered.

After a few moments, the video feed went dark, but voices still could be heard. The journalist even asked if he could retain with him some kind of ID, but was turned down. Vargas was heard repeatedly asking the robber to calm down, but to no avail.

Sports Journalist Left Safe After Being Robbed Of Valuables

The incident sparked a major concern among viewers who were apprehensive about Vargas’ wellbeing. The sports journalist evidently enjoyed much popularity and also happened to be the director of Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League.

It was the show’s host, Ed Martinez, who later offered an update on Vargas’ state. Taking to Instagram, he revealed that the sports journalist managed to escape from the scene of carjacking without any injuries. However, the carjacker had succeeded in driving away his car along with all his valuables.

Martinez informed that Vargas was left perturbed after the incident. He further urged the general public and listeners of the show to help identify the culprit behind the incident. He wrote, “If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.”

Investigation So Far In Carjacking Attempt

According to reports, Fernando Vargas filed a formal police complaint over the carjacking incident. He thereafter received assistance from the National Guard personnel, as an imminent investigation and search for the carjacker was underway. However, no arrests have been made as of yet to narrow down the suspect of the carjacking.

Well, the city of Morelos in Southern Mexico has lately recorded a high percentage of crimes over the past few years. As per an existing U.S. State Department advisory, travelers are apparently asked to reconsider traveling through this area due to its high crime rate.
