Edsel Robert Johnson Johnson was driving a silver van at a high speed, the wrong way on Beck Road.

According to court records, the shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on May 9 as a crowd gathered at the Stateline Speedway in Post Falls for the Night Lights Sky Lantern Festival. Witnesses told investigators that Johnson was driving a silver van at a high speed, the wrong way on Beck Road.

The street was packed with people, most of whom moved out of Johnson's way. However, Rex did not. His wife told investigators that Rex was trying to protect bystanders. Rex allegedly swung a folding chair at the side of the vehicle, and the situation escalated quickly.

According to witnesses, Johnson stopped the van and charged at Rex. He allegedly “body slammed” him into a ditch and then returned to the vehicle. Rex, who was unarmed, approached the driver’s side window, and that is when Johnson allegedly fired a single shot at him and drove away.
