The mystery surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is growing. Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director Daniel John Bongino discussed different scenarios in the case on February 9.

The Fox News contributor told "Hannity" that there are three possible explanations for what happened to 84-year-old Guthrie, not just a simple kidnapping.

You Have to Think Outside the Box: Bongino

First, Bongino acknowledged the possibility that it was a kidnapping in which someone took her for ransom. “The first scenario is obviously kidnapping for a ransom payment,” he said in the latest interview.

Second, Bongino said it could have been “a crime that went bad.”

He said, “Someone was at the house, maybe a burglar, and something went bad there.” He added that someone might have faked a ransom demand afterward to capitalize on the situation.

The third possibility is one where “you have to think outside the box”, according to Bongino. “With the messages that we’ve seen, there might have been some medical emergency, and this may not be a kidnapping at all,” he said.

He emphasizes that when someone cannot be located quickly in a case like this, either the perpetrators were very sophisticated, or “the story you’ve been told — or believed — might not be the story.”

“There are a lot of conflicting stories. You must consider that this was someone who knew the person, someone like an electrician, and the ransom requests were sent to just lead people off the trail,” Bongino added.

A Potential Crime-Gone-Wrong?

Former FBI supervisory special agent, Rob Chadwick, had earlier stated that those involved with the kidnapping did not expect the case to gain widespread media attention. “The facts of what I see available to use right now are more in line with a potential crime-gone-wrong,” Chadwick said while speaking on the “Will Cain Show”.

“It could’ve been targeted, could have been random – we don’t know. But we don’t see a traditional kidnapping or designed kidnapping for ransom,” the ex-FBI agent added, according to Fox News.

Nancy Guthrie Was Supposed to Attend a Livestreamed Church Service on February 1?

Meanwhile, a source close to the Guthrie family claimed that reports about how Nancy Guthrie was discovered missing are inaccurate.

The source claimed that Guthrie was not expected at an in-person Tucson church service on February 1. Instead, as she had done every Sunday since the pandemic, she was supposed to attend a livestreamed New York-based church service at a friend’s home.

When she failed to arrive and could not be reached, the friend alerted Nancy’s daughter, Annie Guthrie.
