The 55-year-old victim suffered critical injuries after the stabbing incident.

On May 12, at about 10:25 p.m., the Cedar City Police Department (CCPD) responded to a call about a man bleeding on a porch. The 55-year-old victim, who is deaf, was found outside his trailer at 1027 N. Main. According to a probable cause affidavit, he was “suffering from multiple stab and cut wounds.”

When officers arrived at the scene, the man was already receiving first aid from someone. Police followed his blood trail and found his trailer with “a substantial amount of blood on the floors and walls being visible from the rear door.”

The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He was able to identify the suspect as Borges. However, detectives were unable to find him immediately and instead asked the residents to be on the lookout. A security surveillance video also showed a man matching the suspect’s description fleeing the scene before police arrived.

On May 13, officers were called by a neighbor who reported Borges entering a different trailer. CCPD arrived at the scene with a search warrant. According to authorities, “Due to the seriousness of the incident and concerns for public safety, the SWAT team was activated, and nearby residents were evacuated as officers secured the area. A search warrant was obtained, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.”

Authorities said the suspect is homeless and has no ties with the community.

When police got Borges to exit the trailer, he was wearing a hoodie covered in cattails. According to authorities, this was consistent with the theory that he was hiding in a nearby field throughout the night to evade law enforcement.

In a subsequent interview with the investigators, Borges reportedly confessed to stabbing the deaf man. According to the affidavit, he admitted, “I did the crime, it was me, I did it.” He is now being held without bail.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family said he received several stitches for his wounds. He was discharged and is in a stable condition. In a statement, police said, “This, by all appearances, was a non-motivated crime that resulted in serious bodily injury to another.”
