Florida Son Who Crawled Through Dog Door, Killed Mother Over Failed Theft Gets 56-Year Sentence

Man stabs mother to death in Florida, sentenced to 56 years in prison.
A Florida man has been sentenced to decades in prison after admitting he broke into his mother’s home and stabbed her to death while two children were inside, according to police.
Hillsborough County Circuit Judge G. Gregory Green on April 20 sentenced John “Jake” Jacob Aylor, 39, to 56 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a weapon and armed burglary with battery in the August 2024 killing of his mother, 64-year-old Julie Aylor.

Florida man fatally stabs mother at least 10 times before fleeing.
Prosecutors noted that the attack happened in the early hours of August 12, 2024, at the victim’s home in Brandon, Florida. Two young grandchildren were in the house at the time.
According to investigators, Aylor entered through a dog door at the back of the home. He had used that entry before, deputies said. The bicycle he often rode was found outside that morning.
One of the children woke around 4:30 a.m. to the sound of a man yelling. She later told deputies she recognized the voice as her father. Moments later, she heard her grandmother scream his nickname.
“Jake, help me,” the victim cried, according to witness statements.
The child then heard calls for help. Minutes later, she dialed 911 and told dispatchers her grandmother was “bleeding out.”
Deputies arrived to find Julie Aylor dead. The medical examiner said she had been stabbed at least 10 times, with fatal wounds to her neck and torso.
Inside the home, investigators found a blood-covered knife from the kitchen and a second broken knife. Aylor's palm print was later identified in suspected blood on one of the weapons. Authorities also said he took the victim’s phone while fleeing. It was later found several houses away with his fingerprint on it.
Julie Aylor, 64, was stabbed to death by her son.
Officials believe the attack followed a failed attempt to steal. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said Aylor became angry when he could not find anything worth taking.
“This is a mother who has been taking care of his child since she was born,” Chronister said earlier.
Aylor fled on foot after stabbing. Later, the deputies searched nearby areas before a tip led them to a home less than a mile away. He was arrested the next day and remained in custody.
He had first been charged with first-degree murder, but later accepted the plea deal.
Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez said the decision was made to protect the family, especially the children, from testifying in court.
"Our focus was on protecting the victim's family and minimizing further harm," Lopez said in a statement. "Two of the key witnesses are minor family members, and moving forward with a trial would have required them to relive deeply traumatic events."
She added the sentence ensures accountability and means Aylor will spend most of his life in jail.
