A 21-year-old woman who was returning home from a friend’s wedding in Florida was killed in a crash. A 53-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with her death.

According to Akey’s family, she sent them a text moments before she was killed in the crash. Akey, who was returning from the wedding, told her family that she loved them and would be home soon. At that time, she reportedly filled her car with fuel.

Lauryn Akey, 21, was returning home from the event on May 17, when the crash occurred in Charlotte County at around 1 a.m., according to authorities. Akey, who was a senior student at the University of South Florida, was a “bright light in the lives of all who knew her,” according to her family.

Lauryn Akey informed her family she was coming home before the tragic crash.

Dennis Olson, 53, has been arrested in connection with the crash that resulted in Akey’s death. Olson was taken to a hospital for his injuries and was later taken into custody after being discharged. According to authorities, Olson allegedly drove his F-150 truck the wrong way on Interstate 75 and crashed into Akey's Honda CR-V.

According to Olson’s arrest report, Akey was “ejected” from her car and died at the scene. While talking with investigators, Olson claimed that he had lost all recollection of the crash. However, he admitted that he had a glass of wine as he was having a “bad night.”

Olson told investigators that he was returning from the Sip & Sizzle restaurant in Fort Myers. However, authorities said that his blood alcohol content was 0.222, which is nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08.

Olson smashed into Akey's car as she was on her way home.

Olson was charged with one count of negligent manslaughter in a DUI causing death. He is also facing one count of vehicular homicide. The has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held without bond, according to court records.

In her obituary, Akey’s family said, “Though Lauryn’s time here was far too brief, she made a lasting impact on everyone blessed enough to know and love her. She will be remembered for her bright personality, loving heart, contagious laughter, and the countless beautiful memories she created with family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed every day.
