The 14-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, is being held after the incident. The 12-year-old victim has been identified by family members as Cameron Coney. The 14-year-old is facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting.

Authorities have not confirmed what led to the shooting. However, family members told local ABC affiliate, WSB that Coney had friends over and one of the teens had a gun.

“We were told one of them pointed the gun at all the friends, and when it got to Cameron, it was on his chest,” Coney’s aunt, Latosha Cony, said. That is when the 14-year-old allegedly pulled the trigger. It remains unclear whether the shooting was intentional or accidental.

In a GoFundMe description, the family described Coney as “a silly, playful young boy who was known for making people laugh with his jokes.”

“What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that Cameron was shot in his own room, in the place where he should have felt most safe, which is his own house. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain,” the description said.

The 14-year-old suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Metro Youth Detention Center, where he remains. A court date has not been announced.

However, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are yet to release additional details, including a possible motive. All available information so far has come from the victim's family, who spoke to local media.
