A security guard in Georgia died after being shot from behind while trying to break up a fight between a man and a woman. The guard intervened to prevent the man from assaulting the woman late at night after the establishment had closed, according to authorities.
The accused has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
The 28-year-old security guard was identified as Jordon Alexander Jones. The accused, 25-year-old Daniel Di Vonne Parsons, is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.
Police in Ackworth, about 30 miles northwest of Atlanta, responded to a shooting shortly after 2:40 a.m. They arrived at Saddlebar, located at 5160 Crown Road, where the incident occurred. Upon arrival, officers found Jones with a gunshot wound to the head. The first responders immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he died.
According to the investigators, Jones was working as a security guard at the Saddlebar on the night of the shooting. He attempted to break up a fight between Parsons and a woman. Parsons allegedly tried to assault the woman and Jones intervened. Parsons reportedly then picked up a gun and shot Jones from behind.
Jones' uncle, in an interview with ABC affiliate WSB, said his nephew intervened after seeing Parsons assaulting a woman. “Jordan, being who Jordon is, you know, he sees something going wrong, you know, he is not gonna just let it happen, watch others on while they tape it,” Jones’s uncle said. “So he stepped in, and just said, you know, he was not violent with the guy, you know? He simply grabbed him, an old bear hug, and put him to the side.”
Saddlebar posted a statement on social media, saying Jones “courageously intervened and stepped in to stop the assault, protecting the woman and de-escalating the situation.” After the fight, Parsons allegedly grabbed a gun and shot Jones in the head.
“Our entire Saddlebar team is grieving the loss of a great individual who put himself in harm’s way to protect someone else. His courage and selflessness will not be forgotten,” the bar wrote.
Jones graduated from Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville. He later returned as a substitute teacher and football coach, according to the school. “Jordon was a proud bear who made a lasting impact on our program as both a student and an athlete, and later as a coach. After continuing his career at the University of West Alabama, he returned home to give back to the program he loved,” the school said in an Instagram post.
“Jordon was a leader on and off the field and a tremendous role model for our student-athletes. His legacy will live on in the lives he impacted,” the post read.
