A Northwest Indiana woman is awaiting the release of her son, who is imprisoned halfway across the world for a crime he allegedly did not commit, she says. 34-year-old Christopher Payne has been incarcerated in a Japanese prison for more than four years on the allegation of s—-- assault.

Payne moved to Japan in 2013 after learning Japanese. Things seemed to go well during the first few years, as the Crown Point native worked as an English teacher and learned mixed martial arts. But his life turned upside down in November 2021 when he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Japanese woman.

Disputed DNA evidence in the case

The assault took place three years prior to the arrest, in July 2018, when a woman in Chiba Prefecture told police that a man who spoke “perfect, unaccented Japanese” had attacked her. Investigators collected a contaminated DNA sample from her mouth at the time.

Then, in February 2019, Payne was taken into custody for a minor, unrelated incident after he fell asleep on a stranger’s doorstep while intoxicated. During the investigation, he voluntarily gave a DNA sample, believing he had nothing to hide.

A year and a half later, police claimed that Payne’s DNA matched the 2018 sample. He was arrested despite his physical appearance and accent not matching the victim’s initial description. Based on the DNA evidence, a court found him guilty in July 2024 and sentenced him to eight years in prison.

As Payne maintained his innocence, his defense was able to obtain raw DNA data. They discovered that the prosecution's expert had allegedly edited the results to force a match with Payne. Innocence Project Japan, an organization dedicated to redressing cases of wrongful convictions through DNA evidence, also came forward to support him.

Owing to the defense’s allegations against the prosecution's DNA expert, and the public outrage over the case, the Tokyo High Court overturned Payne's conviction in December 2025. The case was sent back to the district court for a retrial.

But Payne’s troubles did not end. Under Japanese law, suspects must remain in prison while awaiting trial. The system has been designed to pressure the accused into admitting to crimes.

Hence, Payne has spent the last four years in solitary confinement without bail. Experts say his retrial could take another two to three years to begin. Back home, Payne’s mother, Ronda Payne, remains worried about her son and has launched a campaign to urge the U.S. government to intervene

Ronda talked about her son’s plight in an interview with CBS News and said, "He has not talked on a phone. He has not hugged a person. He has not done anything in four years. As a mother, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I would not.”

Ronda also revealed that Payne’s condition has worsened, adding that he has recently reported multiple incidents of vomiting blood. Both his family and his lawyers are concerned about his health, fearing he may not survive until his retrial. A man who moved to Japan in hopes of building a better life now faces an uncertain future.
