A teenager from Indiana has been arrested and charged with murder after he fatally beat up a 71-year-old man inside his house and left him there to die. The police found the older man bound inside his house. After the accused was arrested, he allegedly told authorities, “I am done like fried chicken.”
Camieon Brown has been taken into custody for fatally wounding a 71-year-old man.
A 19-year-old man from Indiana, identified as Camieon Brown, was taken into custody by officers from the Gary Police Department. Brown was charged with one count each of murder and theft in connection with the slaying of a 71-year-old man identified as Darryl Miller, according to court records.
Background
Officers from the Garry Police Department responded to a call on April 12, requesting a welfare check on Miller’s home, located on the 2200 block of Rhode Island Street, according to a news release. The police responded to Miller’s house for a welfare check after his friends reported that they had not seen or heard from him for several days. Miller’s friends entered the residence and found his body wrapped in blankets, then alerted authorities.
An officer entered the apartment and found Miller’s body on the bedroom floor, wrapped in blankets, with his legs tied with duct tape, according to court documentation. Investigators also found a bedroom in disarray, with a mattress flipped, indicating a struggle.
Officers later that day took Brown into custody in Porter County after a brief pursuit. Investigators said the case remains ongoing.
Investigation Details
Miller’s Honda Accord was missing from his home. A witness told police that Miller often allowed unhoused individuals to stay with him, according to WGN reports. The witness identified Brown as someone who had been staying at the residence and saw him there shortly before the body was discovered.
The stolen vehicle was later found on the Interstate 80/94 in Porter County, where Brown was driving, according to court documents. Brown claimed the violence began after Miller “started to touch him inappropriately,” leading to a physical fight where he knocked the old man down. According to the affidavit, Brown then punched and kicked the older man. When Miller spoke during the assault, Brown allegedly responded, “Really.”
Investigators said the victim suffered extensive injury, including a blunt forehead trauma on his head and torso, along with defensive wounds such as a broken jaw, fractured ribs, punctured lungs, and dislocated fingers. The Lake County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.
Court records show Brown has multiple pending criminal cases, including charges related to assault and battery against a public safety official, theft, and resisting law enforcement. Brown remains in custody following his arrest.
