'This could have been a massacre': Mom Gunned Down Holding Her Infant. Nine Other Children Were Almost Slaughtered.

A young mom was in her apartment holding her 1-year-old son as they hosted a gathering for his birthday. That was until a man burst in, hoping to steal money and pot.

The mom was shot and killed, holding her child as bullets flew. Now, the killer who pulled the trigger will head to prison for decades.

Recently, a judge in Kentucky sentenced Demetrius Roberson, for the killing of Lexus Bell, 21, in August 2016, according to WBKO. The judge sentenced the murderer to life in prison, though he will be parole eligible after 25 years.

He was convicted of murder, attempted murder, first-degree robbery and nine counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, according to WBKO.

He was one of five people connected in connection to the case.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported that Bell was in her home in Russellville, Kentucky, on Aug. 21, 2016. She was holding her son, who just turned 1 year old.

Roberson burst into the apartment hoping to steal money, marijuana and guns, according to investigators and reported by WBKO.

Eleven shots were fired into the apartment, and nine children were inside, the Daily News reported. The children were planning to spend the night before heading to a birthday party the next day.

Logan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Neil Kerr admitted to the Daily News, the shooting could have been a lot worse than one murder.

“This could have been a massacre,” Kerr wrote in an email to the Daily News. “Not a single person in law enforcement locally can recall anything in the history of our community when there was such a potential for so many lives to be lost. One life was needlessly lost, and it could have been 11.”

Kerr sought life without parole for Roberson, but the jury recommended the sentence that made him parole eligible.

“I am grateful that justice was finally delivered for Lexus, Estoria and each of the children that were there that night,” Kerr explained to the Daily News. “I am hopeful that Lexus’ family will finally be able to mourn their loss. We should all keep them in our prayers.”
