A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to death for killing his four neighbor's.

The accused is a 46-year-old man from Nebraska, identified as Jason Jones.

Jones was convicted on a total of ten felonies, including murder charges, in connection with the killings of 86-year-old Gene Twiford, his wife, 85-year-old Janet Twiford, their daughter, 55-year-old Dana Twiford, and another neighbor, 53-year-old Michele Ebeling.

The defendant’s wife, a 46-year-old woman identified as Carrie Jones, was convicted in August 2025 of the murder of 86-year-old Gene Twiford. In November 2025, she was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, along with an additional 21-30 years for accessory to murder and evidence tampering. A three-judge panel later sentenced Jason Jones to death.

“We are grateful for the work of the three-judge panel and their thought and well-reasoned order,” Nebraska Attorney General, Mike Hilgers said in a press release.

“The panel laid out the horrific details surrounding the quadruple homicide Jason Jones committed and explained why the death penalty is an appropriate sentence,” he said.

In August 2022, the Twifords and Ebeling were found murdered in two separate homes in Laurel, a town about 130 miles northwest of Omaha. Both houses were set ablaze after the killings.

However, investigators said Carrie Jones had often complained to her husband about Gene Twiford, accusing him of verbally abusing her for years. “This is got to stop, or I am going to kill him,” she said, according to reports from Nebraska Public Media. Investigators said the older man, who lived blocks away from the Jones family, had a reputation for verbally harassing others in the area and had been asked to leave certain places.

The night before the murders, the couple had a violent argument during which Carie Jones threatened her husband with a gun and a knife and told him to take care of Twiford or else she would do it herself. Jason Jones said during her trial that his wife was a “very difficult woman.”

Background

On the night of August 4, 2022, Jason broke into Twiford’s home and shot him to death. He did not realize Janet Twiford and Dana Twiford were also inside and shot them as well. After killing them, he set the house on fire. Jones then went to Ebeling’s home and killed her.

Jones later returned to his home with severe burns, which Carrie Jones said looked “melting” and “gooey”. He did not seek medical attention because the couple believed it would raise suspicion about the source of his injuries. Jones later confessed the crimes to his wife, who left for work while he drifted in and out of consciousness.
