Mayhem In Tampa: Police Busts Teen Takeover, 22 People Arrested And Facing Charges

Tampa police used night surveillance camera and helicopters to control situation
A massive teen takeover was brought under control in Tampa, Florida, by police on May 8. Officers arrested a group of 22 individuals between the ages of 12 and 21 after they allegedly tried to take over part of a public area and create chaos.
In body camera and surveillance footage shared by the police department on social media, the disorder was quickly brought under control. The accused teenagers allegedly disrupted public property and became involved in a brawl among themselves.
Tampa Police Responds To Teenage Takeover
Authorities at the Tampa Police Department deployed officers on bike units and helicopters to break up a teen takeover near Curtis Hixon Park. The teenagers were involved in chaos, including fights and arguments, which threatened people in the surrounding area.
One body camera video from the incident shows teenagers fighting each other. While the reason for their behavior was unclear, officers moved in, separated them and restored order.
Footage released by police also shows the remaining group of teens spreading throughout the park as some continued fighting. To locate and detain them, officers used helicopters and night-vision cameras, which helped track clusters of teens across the area.

Police Issue Statement As Teens Arrested For Creating Ruckus
In the wake of the incident, Police Chief Lee Bercaw reminded parents to stay vigilant about their teenage children. He urged them to pay close attention to where their children are, whom they are with and what they are doing. Moreover, Bercaw said that such disorderly behavior during the teenage years can lead to lasting consequences into adulthood.
He added, “Parents need to know where their children are and who they are with. Unfortunately, the poor decisions made by these 22 individuals last night could have lasting consequences that follow them well into adulthood. The Tampa Police Department remains committed to being one of the safest major cities in the nation, and we will continue taking strong enforcement action against anyone who threatens the peace and safety of our community.”
All 22 of the teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident. They were charged with affray, possession of narcotics, resisting without violence, and unlawful possession of weapons. The Tampa Police were able to seize two firearms and a vehicle, which were used and linked to the teen takeover attempt.
Police Assures Preparedness For Further Takeover Attempts
Besides the recent incident, the Tampa Police are also on high alert for controlling any similar situation that could happen in the near future. The officials are said to be aware of a flyer on social media recently, which apparently promotes a second such gathering to take place in the same week.
The Police Chief remarked, “We will be out there. We will be prepared. And if we have to hold people accountable, we will. And if that means we have to arrest 22 more, so be it.”
Not just in Tampa, but repeated incidents of teenage takeovers seem to have become quite common across various cities. These kinds of mass gatherings usually involve teenagers and juveniles, who end up getting arrested for disturbing the peace and quiet of the community.
