Mexican Man Impersonated Border Patrol Agent, Misled Officers On Immigration Enforcement Missions In South California

Man pleads guilty of impersonating a U.S. border patrol agent
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California recently reported an incident in which a man attempted to impersonate a Border Patrol agent. The Mexican suspect ended up diverting a group of actual immigration enforcement officers from carrying out their duties across Southern California.
In court, the suspect pleaded guilty to actions intended to make federal agents abandon their mission. He also admitted to harassing officers and chasing them onto the highway.
Man Followed Border Patrol Agents While Riding A Faux Vehicle
Prosecutors alleged that the suspect, Jamie Ernesto Alvarez-Gonzalez, followed a Border Patrol agent on January 8 in San Diego. He purposely drove a black Ford F-150 model, a vehicle commonly used by undercover federal agents. Additionally, his vehicle had a special license plate with 'federal truck' written on it in extremely small font.
Although the word federal happened to be misspelled, it could not easily be deciphered. Gonzalez also had a Border Patrol sticker attached to the windshield, had non-working radio communication antennas set up on the roof and handcuffs hanging in the rearview mirror of the car.
Suspect Misled Officers, Diverted Them From Immigration Enforcement
Because Gonzalez followed the Border Patrol officers so closely, it led the agents to abandon their mission. They believed other agents were already responding. According to reports, one of the officers confronted the suspect, and Gonzalez responded by hurling obscenities. He also demanded that they leave the Linda Vista community.
Three other vehicles also helped chase the agents onto the highway. In a video recording of the incident, Gonzalez reportedly stated that he had brought reinforcements and that he was looking for federal agents involved in immigration enforcement. The suspect also displayed a fake FBI badge.
It was after a week of this incident that Gonzalez was arrested. He was apprehended by officers who found the suspect driving a completely different vehicle and not the one he used to trick real officers on duty. He also had an FBI lightbar on the dashboard and carried a fake identification card.

Suspect Pleads Guilty During Trial
According to court documents, Gonzalez had been a Mexican national who overstayed his tourist visa and was living in the United States without legal status. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claimed that the suspect had been in the country for decades, having gone largely unnoticed.
Investigators alleged that the suspect had gradually acquired multiple firearms. He was able to do so over the years by allegedly making false statements about his citizenship status on government forms during purchases. Prosecutors also stated that Gonzalez, during his time in custody, prompted a third party outside to destroy evidence related to the case.
In court, the suspect pleaded guilty to the impersonation incident. He was charged with one count of impersonating a federal officer and three counts of illegally possessing firearms. While the exact reason for carrying out the crime has not been specified, Gonzalez has been given a public defender in the case.
