Michigan Teen’s Chilling One-Word Message to Gas Station Worker Helps Foil Kidnapping

The 16-year-old was taken to a gas station minutes after she was abducted.
In Michigan, a gas station clerk is being praised for saving a 16-year-old girl who had been kidnapped on her way to school. According to police, the girl was found safe, and a suspect is now in custody.
The incident took place on the morning of April 13 in Hamtramck. Police said they received a report of a possible kidnapping, and officers quickly responded. Officers soon found the suspect and rescued the situation could escalate.

The gas station clerk quickly responded to the 16-year-old's call for help.
Police Chief Hussein Farhat said the case appears to be isolated. “The juvenile was also recovered at this time without further incident,” Farhat said.
“This appears to be an isolated incident, and there are not believed to be continued threats to the community,” he said.
According to People, the rescue took a drastic turn about 30 minutes after the kidnapping. The suspect took the girl to a gas station in Detroit to buy cigarettes. At the station, Abdulrahman Abohatem noticed that something was wrong.
“When he asked her to pay for cigarettes, I stopped,” Abohatem said. “She mouthed to me, with no sound, ‘Help.’”
Abohatem quickly acted, stepped out from behind the protective glass, confronted the suspect, and forced him out of the store. He then helped the girl get to safety.
Police arrived moments later. Then, Abohatem said, “I saw the police outside. I pointed to him. I go, ‘That’s the guy.’”

Authorities said a weapon was also recovered at the scene. Police later identified the suspect as Donald J. Fields from Detroit. He was arraigned in court and is now facing several serious charges, including kidnapping, first-degree criminal s----- conduct, possession of a firearm, and felonious assault. He is being held in jail without bond.
Other students from the school also helped in the case. Police praised students who witnessed the kidnapping and used social media to track the situation and alert others.
The girl is a student at Frontier International Academy. The school confirmed she is now safe and with her family. “We are grateful to report that the student has safely recovered,” the school said in an issued statement. “Law enforcement acted swiftly, and a suspect is in custody.”
According to the victim’s family, she is recovering at home. Meanwhile, Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi praised both the clerk and the community for their help in the case. Abohatem also reflected on his actions and said, “I feel good when you save somebody. Sixteen years old - she is a child.”
