As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, her neighbor has recalled a strange interaction with a couple who claimed to be Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. Guthrie has been missing since February 1, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI are jointly investigating the case.

Aldine Meister, one of Guthrie’s neighbors, said there was confusion involving federal agents during the early days of the investigation. Meister spoke in an interview with investigative journalist Brian Entin and described a mysterious interaction her sister had with two people who claimed to be law enforcement agents.

Nancy Guthrie's neighbor describes a bizarre FBI mixup during the initial days of the investigation.

According to Meister, her sister, who also lives in the same neighborhood as Guthrie, was approached by two apparent FBI agents on the second Friday night after the disappearance. Meister said the pair, a man and a woman, knocked on her sister’s windows and repeatedly rang the doorbell at about 7:30 p.m.

Meister said it was raining outside and the two individuals were wearing hoodies. After entering the house, they asked the woman if she had a pacemaker and requested to check her garage. At the time, Meister's sister was alone in the house.

Meister said the two individuals stayed at the property for about 20 minutes. During that time, the woman removed her hoodie, but the man kept his on. Meister said her sister became suspicious when she asked questions about the investigation and received vague answers.

“The guy didn't really speak, and he kind of creeped her out. So they left, and my niece called and said, ‘Are you sure they were the FBI?’ Because we all had discussed about copycat crimes, people posing as police officers, things like that,” Meister said.

Meister said her sister then tried to call the FBI to confirm whether agents had been sent to her home. When she could not reach anyone, she called 911.

The woman was shocked when officials told her that the people who visited her home were not FBI agents.

“She called 911 and within 15 minutes, 10 minutes, there were seven police cars, four FBI agents, said it wasn't the FBI. She was terrified. They swabbed her, fingerprinted the entire house,” Meister said.

The FBI Later Revealed the Female was Indeed an Agent

Authorities remained at her home for three to four hours that night, Meister said.

However, the following day the FBI contacted Meister's sister and told her that the woman who visited the house was indeed a federal agent. The agency said it did not know the identity of the man who accompanied her, according to Meister.

Meister said, “So the next day at about 3:00 in the afternoon, she got a call from the large group of FBI agents that were there and [they] said, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, that woman was an FBI agent. We don't really know who the guy was, but she was, so you're fine.’ And she was like, ‘No, I'm not fine.’”

Meister said the confusion may have been caused by miscommunication between the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI.

Authorities have interviewed multiple neighbors of Guthrie over the past month. However, the 84-year-old woman has still not been found.
