A Nevada woman has been sentenced to life in prison for drowning and killing her two young children. In March, Henderson native Jovan Trevino, 38, pleaded guilty to the first-degree murders of her children, Christopher Fox, 4, and Gihanna Fox, 1.

On May 12, Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny sentenced Trevino to life in a state prison without the possibility of parole as part of her plea deal. Had Trevino not entered a guilty plea, she could have faced the death penalty.

Trevino had spoken about taking her own life just days before the murders, her husband said in court.

The murders took place on July 19, 2021, inside a home at 700 block of Calamus Palm Place. At the time, Trevino lured Christopher into a bathtub by telling him he could see underwater with a special pair of glasses.

As the unsuspecting child put his head into the tub, Trevino held him underwater for several minutes until he died. She then went to her bedroom and drowned Gihanna in another bathtub. Trevino also wrote a suicide letter and drove to Arizona, while the children’s father, Christopher Fox, returned home and found the kids dead in bathtubs.

Trevino was arrested after confessing to the murders to members of a hospital staff in Bullhead City. Christopher testified during the trial that Trevino had spoken about taking her own life just days before the murders. While he suggested she check into a facility, she later said she was fine.

The defense argued that Trevino, a family services assistant, was under extreme stress and going through a tumultuous relationship with her partner. The defense said she wanted to end her life and did not want to leave her children behind.

The children’s grandmother, Shawna Fox, said, “The cruelty of what you did by leaving them floating dead in their bathtubs for their daddy to find them when he got home from work is unthinkable.” She added that the accused had failed miserably as a mother.

Trevino apologized in court and broke down as she remembered her children.

During her sentencing, Trevino apologized in court and broke down as she remembered her children. “On Monday July 19, 2021, my babies’ precious, innocent lives were taken at the hands of their mommy. I truly was not in the right mind, in the darkest place that I’ve ever been, which is evident by the horrific crime that I did commit,” Trevino said.

Judge Kierny noted that, despite her gruesome crime, Trevino loved her children. Announcing the sentence, the judge said, “I know that as you live out the rest of your life in a jail cell, you’ll probably see them at night, you’ll think of them. That’s really the only tribute left that you can give them at this point.”

The judge further addressed the grieving father and said, “I will remember your case forever. I want you to know there’s no such thing as closure, but this chapter will end, and you will move on from this, and you will figure out a way forward.”
