A New Jersey teen has been accused of killing his grandmother. 18-year-old Louis Brown was arrested in Jackson Township on May 18, for allegedly stabbing 69-year-old Darlene Brown multiple times.

Darlene was found dead inside her home on Justin Way, which she shared with Louis. Around 7 AM, the Jackson Township Police Department officers reached the residence after receiving a call about a murder. It later came out that Louis had made the 911 call himself.

According to arrest documents, Louis told the 911 dispatcher that a murder had taken place at his residence. When asked on the phone whether he had committed the crime, he replied, “Yeah.” The accused reportedly also told the dispatcher that the victim was his relative and that only knives had been used in the crime.

As the first responders arrived at the scene, they saw Louis standing in the front doorway. Noticing the police, the accused raised his hands while holding a cell phone and moved out. He was taken into custody on the spot.

The police officers then entered the home and headed to the first floor, where they found Darlene’s lifeless body lying under a pile of blankets on a bed. They saw multiple stab wounds on her neck and head. Meanwhile, two knives were still lodged in her body. The bed was soaked in blood, and there were multiple bloodstains in other areas of the house.

Louis Is Facing Multiple Charges

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Louis with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.

While the motive behind the crime remains unclear, the victim’s daughter has revealed that Louis was likely suffering from mental health issues. She stated that he had called her a day before the murder, but she could not comprehend what he was trying to say.

Meanwhile, she was worried about her mother’s safety and tried to reach out to her and Louis several times, but received no response. She also claimed that Louis had been acting withdrawn in the days before the alleged crime.

Matt Colangelo, a school resource officer in Jackson Township, also gave an insight into Louis’s mental condition. He said the teen had made threats about wanting to kill people around two years ago, after which he was placed in a homeschool program.

Court documents further revealed that the accused had lived with the victim for most of his life and was not close to many members of his family. Louis’s next court hearing is scheduled for June 8. If found guilty, he could face 30 years to life in prison for the murder charge, with additional time for the weapon charges.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
