It has been more than two weeks since Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing from her home. As her family hopes and waits for her return, a source familiar with the investigation has revealed that Nancy’s disappearance might be a case of burglary gone wrong.
Nancy Guthrie has been missing from her Arizona home since January 31.
Savannah and her siblings have already released multiple videos, addressing their mother’s alleged kidnappers and saying they were willing to talk and pay. However, an insider quoted by CBS 5 crime reporter Briana Whitney has disclosed that Nancy might not have been taken from her home in an intended kidnapping.
According to the source, investigators believe that the 84-year-old woman could still be alive. In a video posted on social media on February 11, Whitney said, “We can now report that investigators now believe this was a burglary gone wrong.”
She added, “We’ve interviewed multiple experts since this began who said, based on the evidence, the surveillance video, and other aspects of this case, they also believed this was not an intended kidnapping.”
Whitney said, “The widespread belief by investigators tonight is that Nancy Guthrie could be alive.” However, the claims have not been confirmed by any official announcement.
Instead, Chris Nanos, Pima County sheriff, who is investigating the case with the FBI, said the motive could not be confirmed until suspects are arrested. He said, “Motive is hard to place right now without a suspect in custody, so everything is just speculative.”
Meanwhile, the FBI collected DNA evidence from a car and a glove found near Nancy Guthrie’s residence. The evidence was collected on February 13 and is undergoing testing.
Earlier, on February 11, the FBI released surveillance video showing a masked person tampering with the doorbell camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s home. A man was later stopped at a traffic checkpoint and detained for questioning but was released the same day.
Nancy Disappeared On the Night of January 31
Savannah Guthrie appeals to abductors to release her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie.
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her secluded home in Tucson, Arizona, after a family dinner on the night of January 31. Multiple media outlets received ransom notes from alleged kidnappers who demanded $6 million in bitcoin in exchange for Nancy Guthrie.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings later pleaded for their mother’s safe return and revealed that Nancy Guthrie faces serious health issues. She cannot survive without critical medications, which were left behind at her home.
On February 15, Savannah Guthrie posted another video on Instagram, again addressing the abductors and urging them to do the right thing. The Today host said, “It’s been two weeks since our mom was taken, and I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope and we still believe.”
She added, “And I wanted to say to whoever has her or knows where she is that it’s never too late… you’re not lost or alone. And it is never too late to do the right thing. We believe in the essential goodness of every human being. And it’s never too late.”
