An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 62 years in prison after fatally shooting his roommate to death and hiding the body in a locked bedroom. James Grossnickle, 54, was convicted this March of murder and unlawful firearm possession in the death of 40-year-old Craig Esmon Jacobs.

He was also convicted of illegal gun possession as a “serious violent felon.” On Sept. 4, 2024, Jacobs’ friends forced open a locked bedroom door at Grossnickle’s home on South Gray Street and found Jacobs dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said Jacobs had likely been dead for some time, and investigators later learned he had been missing for several days.

A man sentenced to life in prison for murdering roommate.

Craig Jacobs, 40, was found dead on Sept. 4, 2024, in a locked bedroom at the Indianapolis home. Grossnickle had previously threatened Jacobs, vowing to shoot him and "send a bag with body parts to your family."

Friends of Jacobs became worried when he disappeared for several days. Two days before the body was found, a visitor went to the home and asked Grossnickle about Jacobs.

Law & Order reported that one key witness recalled, “[Grossnickle] advised [the witness] not to go back there because [Jacobs] was b– and was in a bad mood. [Grossnickle] said he got into an argument with [Jacobs], and then [Grossnickle] started rumbling and made statements to the extent of 'Em a crazy motherf–, I'll shoot you in the head, and I'll send a bag with body parts to your family.’”

When friends later returned and found Jacobs' car was gone, they forced entry into the locked bedroom and discovered his body inside. The victim was found on a bed with multiple gunshot wounds.

Another man kills his roommate in similar manner.

In a police interview, Grossnickle admitted that days earlier, he shot Jacobs multiple times and then secured the bedroom door with a screwdriver.

He told detectives the gun jammed after firing. Grossnickle also claimed Jacobs was holding a knife, but investigators said they found no evidence to support that claim.

A Marion County jury heard evidence over three days and found Grossnickle guilty of murder and unlawful firearm possession. On April 10, Marion County Judge Jeffrey Marchal sentenced Grossnickle to 62 years in prison.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said Grossnickle tried to hide the truth, but "the jury found the truth the defendant attempted to hide, and today the court reinforced that truth with a sentence that reflects the weight of his crimes."

Mears praised the trial team and added, "I am proud of our trial team for ensuring this defendant will spend the rest of his life in prison for the lives he impacted."

Given Grossnickle's age, the 62-year sentence means he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
