‘Respected’ Florida Santa Performer Arrested; Allegedly Offered to Pay More for 13-Year-Old in Child Predator Sting

A 68-year-old Florida man who dressed up and portrayed Santa Claus at community events has been arrested in a child predator sting, according to authorities. The case is part of a larger undercover operation aimed at suspected child exploitation offenders.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Thomas Allen Hicks.
Hicks was arrested during “Operation Child Protector VIII,” a week-long sting that led to 19 arrests. The information was shared by Sheriff Grady Judd on April 29.
'19 Arrested in Florida Child Predator Sting'
A 68-year-old man, who dressed as Santa Claus in community events, has been arrested in a child predator sting.
Judd said Hicks believed he was communicating online with the guardian of a 13-year-old girl. However, in reality, he was communicating with an undercover detective.
Officials said Hicks offered to pay more for illegal s----- activity with the child and sent explicit messages during the exchange. Investigators said he was later taken into custody after arranging to meet.
Hicks faces several serious charges, including human trafficking, traveling to meet a minor for unlawful purpose, use of a computer to seduce a child, and use of a communication device to commit a felony.

Sheriff Judd called the case disturbing because of Hick’s public image and role. "It's scary because this guy was well-respected in the community," Judd said at a press conference. He also shared that he had recently met Hicks at an event and even took a photo with him.
Investigators said Hicks worked in marketing for Tri-County Behavioral Health in Polk County. He also portrayed Santa Claus at multiple local events each year, which made his arrest more surprising to residents.
Thomas Allen Hicks was one of the 19 suspects arrested in the operation.
According to the sheriff, Hicks told detectives he had been married for more than 50 years. He also admitted to using online sites linked to prostitution.

In total, 16 suspects allegedly communicated with undercover officers posing as minors or guardians. Three suspects were also involved in sending explicit images. Five suspects came from outside Polk County.
Seven of those arrested were married and three were military veterans. Three suspects faced human trafficking charges for offering payment in exchange for illegal acts involving a child.
Authorities said the suspects are collectively facing 85 felony charges and eight misdemeanors. The investigation is currently ongoing, and officials said additional arrests could also follow.
