Santa Clara neighborhood was rattled following a series of incidents of shooting and a fire.
On the afternoon of May 8, officers from the Santa Clara Police Department responded to a call at the 600 block of Enright Avenue and found a man who had been shot and killed. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities locked down Enright Avenue and nearby streets after receiving reports of gunfire in the middle of the day. Just minutes later, a nearby house caught on fire, resulting in a large emergency response.
Police have characterised the incidents as targeted attacks, and they believe that someone intentionally set the fire after the shooting incident occurred. However, authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the community but have not confirmed whether they are actively seeking a suspect.
Community Impact
One of the residents of the neighborhood who captured the sound of the gunfire on a doorbell camera said, “I heard this live. I was like Oh, my god. That was gunshots for sure,” According to residents of the neighborhood, the victim of the gunshot wound was one of them. They described him as a devoted family man who lived in the neighborhood with his wife and daughter.
Many of the residents recalled seeing the couple walking their dog daily, and described the daughter as the Girl Scout who sold cookies to the neighborhood. “I am just so sorry for the family, so sad,” the neighbor said. “Such a nice family.”
Investigation Details
Crime scene investigators spent hours photographing the scene, taking measurements, and collecting evidence from the remains of the house.
One of the neighbors, identified as Cris Martinez, said he heard “nine shots at around 12:21 p.m., and called 911.” He described how police flooded the neighborhood, and after the firefighters extinguished the flames, SWAT team members searched the area for a possible gunman.
The second body was recovered on the afternoon of May 10 from the burning house; authorities have not revealed the identity of the man. Authorities kept most of the neighborhood locked down on May 8.
Several residents told investigators that they believed the property was being used as a short-term rental, noting a high volume of foot traffic and unfamiliar vehicles at the address. Some residents also said they suspected something unusual was happening in that house. “There were so many people going and coming,” one resident said.
