An armed man attempting to sexually assault a woman he took hostage in a Florida park was left shocked and with his pants around his ankles when she told him that “he would have to shoot her first,” officials said.

On Feb. 10, Donovan Tyler Adkins, 29, approached the woman and her boyfriend in a park and accused them of involvement in a robbery, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Adkins was pretending to talk to someone on the phone when “he forced the female victim into the woods with the firearm” and told her boyfriend to stay put, the sheriff's office said.

Adkins then allegedly “ordered her to perform sexual acts on him," according to the sheriff's office.

Officials said even though the suspect had the gun pointed at her face, the victim refused to comply and told him “he would have to shoot her first”

Adkins had “exposed himself” at this point, the sheriff's office said, and the woman began to scream. "The victim’s boyfriend was quickly approaching their location in the woods, which startled the suspect, causing him to trip and thereby giving the victim a brief opportunity to escape."

The woman and her boyfriend attempted to collect their belongings so they could flee, but Adkins showed up again, grabbed the woman’s cell phone and took off running, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators were able to make an arrest the same day after another park visitor “familiar with the suspect” came forward with information, according to officials.
