A Supreme Court judge has reportedly become the target of a swatting incident. On the night of May 27, an unknown individual called emergency services, stating they had heard a suspicious noise of gunshots at Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s home in Fairfax County, Virginia.

The individual claimed to be the judge’s neighbor. However, when Fairfax County police contacted the Supreme Court of the U.S. Police Department, they found no such incident had taken place at Barrett’s residence.

Swatting is the act of deceiving emergency services through false reports. It is an illegal form of harassment in which a culprit aims to send law enforcement to a target’s home by falsely reporting serious criminal threats.

According to Fairfax County police, Justice Barrett has been targeted in a similar swatting attempt. In an official statement, the police revealed they received a call about gunshots being heard at the judge’s residence around 9 PM on Wednesday.

However, the 911 dispatcher warned officers that the call might be a hoax, noting that Barrett’s residence already has high security. “Be advised, we have not been able to get an answer on callback to the complainant’s phone number. Unknown if it’s going to be a swatting situation or not. [The address] has 24-hour security coverage for a high-priority resident of the county,” the dispatcher said.

The police then contacted the security personnel deployed at Barrett’s home and determined the report was indeed false. “Yesterday evening at approximately 9:02 p.m., officers responded to a swatting call at the residence of U.S. Supreme Court Justice in Fairfax County,” Fairfax County police said in a statement.

The police added, “The call was received through the department’s non-emergency line. Officers immediately coordinated with Supreme Court Police personnel assigned to the residence and quickly determined that the report was fictitious. No additional police resources were utilized.”

After practicing law and working as a professor, Barrett was appointed a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 2017. Three years later, President Donald Trump appointed her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Barrett previously revealed that her job has brought a fresh set of challenges for her. In 2024, she recalled being asked to wear a bulletproof vest while returning home. However, she did not specify what threat prompted this action.

Last year, Barrett’s sister, Amanda Coney Williams, became the target of a bomb threat. In March 2025, Williams, an attorney, received an email claiming that a bomb had been placed in her mailbox in Charleston, South Carolina.

“I’ve constructed a pipe bomb, which I recently placed in Amy Coney Barrett’s sister’s mailbox at her home. The device’s detonation will be triggered as soon as the mailbox is next opened,” the email read. Charleston police’s Explosive Device Team then inspected the mailbox and found the threat to be false.
