Teens Lured ‘Friend’ Into Deadly Trap, Filmed Killing But Receive Lenient Sentences

Mexican girl killed by her teenager friends
Two small-town Mexican girls lured their “friend” into a deadly trap before brutally killing her. According to authorities, the teenagers filmed the whole murder, and it was later sent to the victim’s mother.
The incident unfolded in Sonoyta in September 2025. However, the victim’s body was not located until October. Since both attackers were under the age of 16, they could not be sentenced to more than three years of confinement.

According to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sonora, the unnamed attackers were 13 and 15. They told the victim, identified as Leyla Monserrat Lares Becerra, that they had a “surprise” for her.
The video of the incident, which was filmed by the attackers, was shared online by Univision. As seen in the footage, the two tied Leyla to a chair and blindfolded her. The pair was seen laughing and talking as they committed the crime.
At one point, one of them was speaking to the victim while the other tied the rope around her. Then, they proceeded to reportedly strangle her with the rope. Leyla’s body was discovered in October 2025, when it was already showing signs of decomposition.
Several months later, Leyla’s mother, Carmen Becerra, was sent the video of her murder. The mother alleged that the two teenagers had been harassing her daughter for some time before they killed her.

“As long as the law is what it is, it must be applied in its terms throughout the country," he said. The Comprehensive Criminal Justice System for Adolescents prevents imposing sentences greater than three years of confinement for minors under the age of 16 years old.
In March, the 15-year-old was sentenced to two years and 10 months in confinement, while the 13-year-old was sentenced to only 11 months of supervised release. “By express provision of the law, they cannot be given a greater penalty. The judge simply applied the law,” said Acuña Griego.
The victim’s mother told Univision, “While my daughter's murderers can return to their normal lives, I never even got to say goodbye to my daughter.”
Many were shocked to see how little punishment the pair received for such a horrible act of crime. “Regardless of their ages, they knew right from wrong. This was all premeditated. They should have been punished far more severely than they were. This is all a joke to them,” one social media user commented.
