A man in Tennessee got into a fight with another guy, shot him and then stole his car, police say.
Around 5 a.m. May 16, police in Memphis rushed to a home in the city’s Nutbush neighborhood after receiving reports of a man down, WREG reported. There, officers discovered Ivan Payton unresponsive and suffering a gunshot wound.
Authorities pronounced Payton dead at the scene.
According to witnesses, the shooting victim had gotten into a physical altercation with Raymond Benson, 30. Once the two men were separated, Benson allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at Payton several times, hitting him in the chest.
Benson, witnesses claimed, then fled the scene in the victim’s 2007 Ford Focus.
According to WHBQ-TV, the suspect was captured a week later, and witness reportedly identified Benson in a six-person lineup.
He now faces one count each of second-degree murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun and theft of property.
Benson is being held in the Shelby Couty jail and bond has not been set in his case.
