Texas Man Held Disabled Wife Hostage for 5 Years, Fed Her Only '1 Egg' a Day, Cops Say

James Earl Johnson could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

A 46-year-old Texas man, James Earl Johnson, was arrested on March 6 for allegedly keeping his disabled wife locked up in a room for five years. Johnson of Clear Lake, Texas, has been accused of holding his wife, also 46, captive and neglecting her medical needs.
The couple lived in the Crown Ridge Court neighborhood with their children. Their house is reportedly worth more than a million, but the victim allegedly spent the past five years inside her bedroom with no access to a phone.
The Victim Called 911 After Johnson Forgot His Phone in Her Room
The victim called 911 after her husband James Earl Johnson forgot his phone in her room.
According to court documents, the woman had limited contact with the outside world, was allegedly starved and not receive necessary medical care. After half a decade of captivity, she was finally able to make a 911 call on March 6 after Johnson accidentally left his phone in her room.
However, while she was speaking with first responders, Johnson returned and disconnected the call. Authorities said, he allegedly slapped her and carried her back to her bed. Officers arrived at the scene and found the woman locked inside the room. Johnson was arrested, and the woman was taken to a hospital.

The victim told the police her husband gave her only one egg and some dinner to eat each day. The couple’s son confirmed that his mother was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, but, he did not provide details about her medical condition or disability.
Police said the victim tried to contact authorities on November 16, 2025. When officers arrived at the home, the woman refused to speak to them, which is why they could not file a report at that time.
Johnson Has Been Released on a $50,000 Bond
Johnson has been charged with abandoning or endangering an elderly or disabled person and injury to a disabled person. He was initially held at Harris County Jail, but was later released on a $50,000 bond with conditions.
He has been ordered to wear a GPS monitor, avoid contact with his wife, not to possess a firearm, and not to go within 200 feet of his family home. He will be presented before the court again on March 18.
If convicted, Johnson could face up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 for the second-degree felony of abandoning an elderly or disabled person.
Additionally, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for the third-degree felony of injury to a disabled person.
Trauma therapist Chau Nguyen discussed the complexity of the case in a statement to Eyewitness News.
Nguyen said, “People might think it's easy to just leave, but if you're suffering from some sort of disability, the chances are greater that you can't leave. Over time, there's fear, there's dependence. Sometimes there's even a trauma bond between the victim and the abuser.”
