A Walmart store in Maryland reported an arson incident when a masked shopper allegedly tried to divert attention from his jewelry heist, according to authorities. Man Sets Ablaze Shopping Cart Full Of Fireworks

On April 29, Anthony J. Rhodes of New Jersey stole $10,000 worth of jewelry from the Walmart store and fled the crime scene on his motorbike, according to the investigators. Authorities said the 36-year-old started a fire to divert attention from the theft.

Security footage allegedly showed Rhodes loading a shopping cart with boxes of fireworks and camping fuel near the children’s section of the store. Investigators said he then set the cart on fire, causing multiple fireworks to explode inside the building.

As employees and customers rushed toward the exits during the chaos, Rhodes allegedly smashed a jewelry display case and stole merchandise before fleeing the scene on his motorcycle.
