Court documents of the Palisade fire investigation have unveiled its unexpected connection with the murder of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. A Los Angeles Times report stated that the suspected arsonist behind one of the U.S.’s costliest disasters had an extreme resentment of the rich and ultra-luxurious.

In fact, it was his strong belief that led him to be inspired and deeply motivated by Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering the CEO of United HealthCare Inc. Detailed evidence on the matter has been obtained by the prosecutors in the case of arson.

Suspected Arsonist Inspired By A Murderer

A court brief recently filed in the case of the Palisade fire revealed that the suspected arsonist, Jonathan Rinderknecht, worshipped Mangione as a Robinhood-like figure. A detailed forensic investigation of the former’s computer allegedly revealed his last searched entity was ‘Free Luigi’.

Rinderknecht also reportedly browsed about a group named “reddit lets kill all billionaires”. These search engine entries date back to December 2024. He stands accused of starting the fire at the Pacific Palisades on January 1, 2025. The first flames left the ground smoldering for a long while, after which it exploded uncontrollably into a fire.

Arsonist Showed Deranged Behavior Hours Before Starting The Fire

The court brief also has a short witness account, which proved Rinderknecht’s deranged and wild behavior in the hours leading up to him starting the fire. The arsonist, who was an Uber driver, drove around erratically, as some passengers testified.

He appeared angry, intense, all the while as he drove around. He continued to rant about being upset at the world, and spoke about Luigi Mangione, capitalism and vigilantism.

Federal prosecutors also listed out another episode in Rinderknecht’s personal life, which ended up becoming a factor that fueled his anger. Around the time of New Year’s Eve 2024, he got rebuffed by a co-worker again after they had ended their relationship.

In a fit of rage, he left the woman two voicemails, which exemplified maniacal behaviour. Rinderknecht then reportedly used ChatGPT prompts to express his dissatisfaction with the way the woman treated him. Additionally, the suspect was also reportedly listening to a French rap song at that moment, whose music video displayed images of fire. It is believed that these smaller instances fueled his rage enough to start a fire.

Arsonist Left The Fire Burning Before Calling 911

Prosecutors alleged that the arsonist was alone on the scene of the crime when he started the fire. He watched the fire grow before calling 911, but then left just ahead of the firefighters reaching the spot. Rinderknecht used his iPhone to film the fire from a clearing on the nearby Hidden Buddha Hill.

The arsonist is also believed to have made false statements about the timing of the fire, which contradicts his presence in the area. When interviewed, the defendant falsely claimed he was already going down the hill when he saw the fire burning. In reality, he was not only the one to light the match but also to film the entire brutality on camera.

The Palisades fire killed about 12 people and damaged multiple structures across Palisades and Malibu. Fast forward to now, the case will return to the Los Angeles federal court on May 11, where the judge will consider arguments from both sides to include in the trial.
