The United States men’s national ice hockey team registered a historic win at the Milano Cortina Games on Sunday, February 22, by defeating archrival Canada men's national hockey team and clinching the gold medal. As the country celebrated the victory, the White House took a dig at Canada and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The White House X account resurfaced a February 2025 post by Trudeau that read, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.” Trudeau made the statement following Canada’s win against the U.S. in the four Nations Face-Off championship final.
The post also referenced Donald Trump’s repeated comments about annexing Canada as the 51st state. After the Olympic result, the White House clapped back by sharing an image of the country’s national bird, a bald eagle, attacking a Canada goose.

The White House did not include a caption with the post, but the messaging was still clear. Some social media users appreciated the government for the humor, as one person wrote, “I may not agree with a lot of the policies going into place, but y'all have the social media game locked in. Bravo.”
Another wrote, “So much said without saying a word. That's real power.” One individual also remarked, “Nations roasting each other with memes on X was not in my 2026 bingo card.”
However, some users criticized the post. One critic commented, “Sorry, Canada. Please forgive us for our moronic president.” Another was surprised that the Trump administration could post such an image as they wrote, “I had to triple check to verify this is actually a govt run account.”

While leaders are using the game results to send political messages, hockey fans across both nations are thrilled by the match. The championship game went to overtime after both the USA and Canada teams scored one goal each. Jack Hughes scored the winning goal 1:41 into the 3-on-3 overtime, despite losing a tooth after being hit by a stick earlier in the game.
The USA eventually defeated Canada 2-1, earning the men’s team its first Olympic gold in 46 years. Hughes then expressed his excitement by saying, “I can’t even believe this. I mean, it’s such an unbelievable game, USA-Canada. Such a good game.”
“There’s so many great players. We’re a great team. That’s exactly how we wanted it to go. We’re underdogs to Canada, [but we] beat them. It could have gone either way,” the New Jersey Devils player added.
Trump later congratulated the team with a Truth Social post as he wrote, “Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW! WHAT A GAME!”
Meanwhile, the women’s team continued its decade-long dominance of the game, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime as well, on February 19.
