The wife of a California man who died after a violent attack outside his home said on May 25 that she feels sympathy not only for her family, but also for the suspect’s mother.

Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran and pro supporter of President Donald Trump, died on the night of May 17. He succumbed to the injuries he suffered in the assault outside his Escondido home, according to his wife, Maria Sheron.

“I feel a lot of pain in my heart,” Maria Sheron said while speaking to Nexstar’s KSWB. "I Want My Husband Back!"..."He was My Partner and a beautiful Man!"

Her husband had been hospitalised in critical condition since May 20, when investigators said he was beaten outside the couple’s home. The property is known in the neighbourhood for its large pro-Trump signs and flags. Another person who stepped in to help during the attack was also hurt.

Police later arrested the accused, Thomas Butler, 32, near the scene of the crime.

The next day of the incident, dozens of neighbours, friends, and supporters gathered outside the Sherons’ home. Many waved American flags while others left flowers and flags near the property.

Maria Sheron said the loss has been devastating, but she also feels bad about the family of the accused, Butler.

“I’m feeling bad for the mother for the guy who does that, because he ruined his life,” she said. “I’m feeling bad for her, but the stuff he did to my husband is terrible.” The motive behind the attack is not yet clear, according to the investigators.

Neighbour Jim Gillie described Sheron as someone who strongly defended free speech despite political disagreements.

“Kerry was a Trump supporter, but he was a patriot first, and he was a strong believer in freedom of speech,” Gillie said. “When people would approach him and give him any guff over his opinions, he didn’t let it get under his skin.”

Gillie added that Sheron believed others had the same right to express their views as he did.

A GoFundMe page has since been made to help the Sheron family cover expenses after his death.

Butler made his first court appearance on May 22 and pleaded not guilty to several charges, including attempted first-degree murder, elder abuse causing great bodily injury, battery, and making criminal threats.

However, he remains in jail without bail. Officials with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office were unable to update on the case because of the Memorial Day holiday. It remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek upgraded charges following Sheron’s death.
