Woman convicted for poisoning boyfriend’s drink, leading to his death in Massachusetts.
A 67-year-old woman, Judy Church, has been convicted of first-degree murder with premeditation and extreme atrocity and cruelty for murdering her boyfriend, 55-year-old Leroy Fowler, according to a statement released by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
Church was involved in a “toxic and dysfunctional relationship” with Fowler that involved another woman. Church added antifreeze, which contains ethylene glycol, to his Powerade, according to the statement. Ethylene glycol can also be found in deicing fluid and hydraulic brake fluid. The substance caused Fowler’s death.
“That’s the murder weapon,” prosecutor AJ Camelio said in court about the poisoned drink, according to the statement. The prosecutor also added that Church was the only person who had access to Fowler when the antifreeze might have taken effect after he drank it.
During the trial, a video was shown to the jury, which Church allegedly recorded on her cellphone showing Fowler in pain after he ingested the antifreeze. In the video, Church was heard asking Fowler, 'Are you having fun?'

Background
On November 11, 2022, at around 8 p.m., Salisbury police responded to a 911 call from Church, who told the dispatcher that her “boyfriend must have ingested something,” “could not stand”, and was “pulling the bedroom apart, with a bloody nose,” according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by People.
The prosecutor also informed the jury that Church called 911 only after Fowler asked him to do so. Fowler was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors found antifreeze in his system. The antifreeze had caused several injuries to his internal organs. Fowler died two days later on November 13, 2022.
Investigators who searched the couple’s house found a bottle of Powerade with residue at the bottom, which was tested by the Massachusetts Crime Lab. According to the DA’s office, the lab results showed that, along with antifreeze residue, Church’s DNA was also found.
Church, during her trial, admitted that Fowler was involved with another woman.
“Neither woman was happy with it, as evidenced, in part, by the defendant having created a voodoo doll of the other woman,” the prosecutor said in court, according to the statement.
During the trial, Fowler’s sister testified that Church said, “Leroy had made a comment to her about, well maybe he though that she may have put something in his shake she had made for him,” according to reports by NBC 10.
Church is scheduled to return to court on April 2.
