Suspect Delayed Medical Attention For Injured Officer

When Riveros moved towards the shooter, he got shot. A second officer was also wounded in the gunfire.

Berumen continued firing, thereby preventing other officers from reaching the wounded officer or the victim. Nonetheless, when officers were finally able to reach Riveros and transport him to a hospital, the nine-year veteran was pronounced dead.

In the meantime, officers said that while taking Berumen into custody, he still tried to reach for his rifle. It was then that officers fired their own weapons and subdued him. Authorities estimated that nearly 40 to 60 shell casings were found at the crime scene.

The medical examiner, during court proceedings in the suspect’s murder case, revealed the cause of death for the two victims. Wong was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest, while Officer Riveros died from a bullet wound to the chest. Meanwhile, injured officer Anthony Pimentel suffered abrasions to his face. These were caused by broken glass inside his vehicle, which had been shattered during crossfire.

At the preliminary hearing, the presiding judge, Mike Camacho, emphasized that there was sufficient evidence to move the shooting case to trial. If convicted on the charges against him, Berumen could face life in prison or even the death penalty, depending on the case. That decision would be determined by the district attorney’s office.

The shooter faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murder and the murder of an officer. Additionally, he faces two counts of attempted murder of an officer and one count of possession of an assault weapon. Suspect Berumen is expected to make his next court appearance on April 30.
