David Morens, a former senior advisor at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has been indicted on several federal charges for allegedly concealing sensitive information from the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morens, 78, was once a top aide to Dr Anthony Fauci, the former director of the NIAID, who served as the president's chief medical advisor from 2021 to 2022. He worked with Fauci at the NIAID from 2006 to 2022. The allegations against Morens stem from the debate over whether the COVID-19 virus originated naturally or was leaked from a lab.

The allegations against Morens

On Tuesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that the physician-scientist had been indicted on the charges of conspiracy against the United States, concealment, removal, or mutilation of records; aiding and abetting; and destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in federal investigations.

The prosecution alleges that Morens intentionally evaded the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). He allegedly used a personal Gmail account to discuss official NIAID business, specifically regarding the origins of COVID-19 and the funding of EcoHealth Alliance. EcoHealth is a research organization that awarded a grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

It was the same lab where the virus was believed to have originated. The grant was later terminated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The DOJ also stated that Morens had bragged about learning a secret trick that could make emails disappear, thereby concealing the exchange of sensitive information.

Morens is accused of suppressing the corona virus’s ‘lab leak’ theory and promoting the ‘natural origin’ theory with the support of his colleagues and outside researchers. The DOJ claims that, in doing so, Morens misled Congress and the public.

“Government officials have a solemn duty to provide honest, well-grounded facts and advice in service of the public interest — not to advance their own personal or ideological agendas,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, Morens is also under fire for his relationship with Peter Daszak, the president of EcoHealth. Prosecutors allege that after EcoHealth’s federal funding was suspended due to its links to the Wuhan lab, Morens worked behind the scenes to help restore it.

“These allegations represent a profound abuse of trust at a time when the American people needed it most — during the height of a global pandemic. As alleged in the indictment, Dr. Morens and his co-conspirators deliberately concealed information and falsified records in an effort to suppress alternative theories regarding the origins of COVID-19,” Blanche added.
