Over the years, several high-profile prison deaths have garnered public attention. From music producers to sports stars, a number of well-known figures died behind bars while serving sentences for their crimes or awaiting trials. While some of them passed away from natural causes, others met violent ends. Here are five famous people whose deaths in prison made headlines.
Aaron Hernandez
NFL star Aaron Hernandez’s career ended abruptly when he was arrested for the 2013 murder of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. He was later convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Meanwhile, he was also accused, but later acquitted, of a 2012 double homicide.
On April 19, 2017, Hernandez was found hanging from a bedsheet in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was 27 years old at the time. A posthumous study of his brain revealed he suffered from Stage 3 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), which could have prompted his violent tendencies.
Jeffrey Epstein
Epstein was found dead in his cell.
The infamous financier and convicted s– offender was found dead in his prison cell while awaiting trial in August 2019. Epstein was accused of grooming and abusing numerous underage girls at his mansions in New York and Florida, and also at his private island.
He also recruited victims for his high-profile associates. After his crimes were exposed, Epstein was incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan. The facility was known for housing high-risk inmates.
On August 10, 2019, he was found dead in his cell with a noose made from clothing around his neck. The death was ruled a suicide. However, several conspiracy theories continue to surround his death, with many questioning why two prison guards failed to check on him and how the security cameras near his cell malfunctioned.
Bernie Madoff
Financier and stockbroker Bernie Madoff was convicted of running the largest Ponzi scheme in the country’s history. He defrauded thousands of investors of an estimated $64.8 billion. His victims ranged from Hollywood celebrities to small charitable organizations.
Unlike Hernandez and Epstein, Madoff passed away from natural causes on April 14, 2021, at the age of 82. At the time, he was serving his 150-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, North Carolina.
Phil Spector
Phil Spector died on January 16, 2021 at the age of 81.
Phil Spector was counted among the most prolific music producers of his time. He fell from grace after being convicted of the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson at his mansion. He was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison, with eligibility for parole only after 2024.
After serving 11 years at a California state prison, Spector died on January 16, 2021. He was 81 at the time. While he was reported to have died of natural causes, it was later revealed that he passed away from complications related to COVID-19.
James "Whitey" Bulger
James "Whitey" Bulger was a crime boss and the leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang. For 16 years, he was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted fugitives. He was eventually arrested and convicted of 11 murders.
On October 30, 2018, Bulger was transferred from the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City to a high-security prison in West Virginia. Just hours later, the 89-year-old was beaten to death by his fellow inmates.
