Tillamook County Sheriff, Josh Brown said in a press release that “This incident escalated quickly.”
“Initial investigation indicated that a pregnant adult female, who was carrying her 2-year-old son and walking with her husband, was struck by a silver Jeep Patriot in the parking area,” according to a statement released by Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO).
“After the vehicle stopped, the husband confronted the driver regarding the accident. During the confrontation, Rutledge exited the vehicle and stabbed the husband in the back with a weapon,” the sheriff’s office said.
After the stabbing, Rutledge got back into the Jeep, and the 'vehicle fled the scene.'
The woman who was allegedly driving the Jeep returned to the parking lot on foot after travelling a few blocks.
The sheriff’s office said that during the investigation, the deputies learned the suspect fled on foot and attempted to avoid detection by changing his clothes. Rutledge was located a short time later and taken into custody without further incident.
Both the victim and her 2-year-old son suffered undisclosed injuries, but are expected to recover, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The adult male victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment for a stab wound and is expected to recover," police said.
“The incident had the potential to result in far more serious injuries.” Sheriff Brown said.
“I am proud of the swift action taken by the deputies.”
