Judge Tears Into ‘Evil’ Killer Who Wiped Out Brother’s Family in Cold-Blooded Attack, Imposes 4 Life Terms

Judge Marc Lemieux condemned Paul Caneiro as “evil” before imposing four life sentences without the possibility of parole.
In a sentencing eagerly awaited by the Caneiro family, the judge condemned Paul Caneiro as “evil” and said he possessed a “depraved heart,” driven by greed and jealousy, before handing down his punishment on May 19.
Paul Caneiro, 59, was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering his brother, Keith Caneiro, 50; his sister-in-law, Jennifer Caneiro, 45; and their children, Jesse, 11, and Sophia, 8. He also received an additional sentence for aggravated arson tied to the 2018 case.
Paul Caneiro has been sentenced to four consecutive life terms for murdering his brother and family.
Judge Paints Chilling Picture of Final Moments
Judge Marc Lemieux said the evidence presented during the trial showed a calculated and brutal crime carried out within a matter of hours.
According to CourtTV, Lemieux described Paul Caneiro as “a manipulative, cold-blooded killer who destroyed every life around him in a ruthless effort to preserve his own.”
He highlighted the injuries suffered by Sophia Caneiro, telling the defendant that the child had been stabbed more than 40 times.
“The defendant stabbed Sophia through her nasal cavity with such violence that it fractured her sinus and penetrated her brain,” Lemieux said. “Another stab wound pierced her chest cavity and collapsed her lung. That’s what you did.”
Lemieux emphasized the terror the child endured in her final moments.
“That little 8-year-old, 45-pound girl fought for her life against a 200-pound grown man wielding a knife,” he said. “I submit that the terror that he inflicted cannot be understated.”
The judge called out Caneiro's lack of remorse.
The judge rejected any attempt to characterize the killings as a tragedy, saying the evidence overwhelmingly pointed to Caneiro’s guilt.
“There was an avalanche of evidence pointing to the defendant being a callous, heartless, brutal killer of his brother, his sister-in-law, and two innocent kids,” Lemieux said. “It’s not a tragedy. It’s a flat-out killing of innocent people. Tragedy is a much different word.”
As he concluded the sentencing, Lemieux also pointed to what he viewed as Caneiro’s lack of remorse.
“His address will forever be the Department of Corrections,” the judge said. “His only reality is confinement, consequence, and accountability.”

‘He Got Exactly What He Deserves,’ Prosecutor Says
Prosecutors argued that the murders were motivated by financial gain and connected to an alleged insurance fraud scheme. Paul and Keith Caneiro jointly owned two businesses in Asbury Park.
Following the sentencing, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said the punishment matched the severity of the crimes.
“The sentence demonstrates that a person who is driven by greed and depression, jealousy and viciousness, gets exactly what he deserves,” Santiago said.
Family members also addressed the court, describing the lasting devastation caused by the killings. Jennifer Caneiro’s sister, Bonnie Karidis, remembered the family as close-knit and beloved in their community.
“They were beautiful children, a beautiful family. They did everything together. They loved each other,” she said.
Jennifer’s mother, Bette Karidis, criticized Caneiro for continuing to deny responsibility. “He could have stopped this from dragging on, but no, he sits here today with his evil soul, still not admitting what he has done,” she said, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
What Happened
The murders occurred on November 20, 2018, at the Caneiro family’s home in Colts Neck, New Jersey. Prosecutors said Paul Caneiro killed the four victims and then set fire to the residence in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Keith Caneiro's body was found outside the house with four gunshot wounds to the head and one to the torso. Jennifer's, Jesse's, and Sophia's bodies were found inside the house.
Investigators also alleged he set a fire at his own home earlier that morning to make it appear that both families had been targeted.
Throughout the case, Caneiro maintained his innocence. His defense argued that investigators focused on him too quickly and suggested that another brother could have been responsible for the killings. Jurors ultimately rejected that theory, finding Caneiro guilty on all counts on February 13, 2026.
