A Nebraska man has been sentenced to life in prison after he broke into his former fiancée’s house and killed her.

A 55-year-old man from Nebraska, identified as Casey Kindt, pleaded no contest to eight felony charges and three misdemeanor charges in February 2025. The charges are in connection with the murder of his ex-fiancée, Jamie Hagen.

After Kindt entered the plea as part of a plea deal, prosecutors reduced one count of first-degree murder to one count of second-degree murder.

Seward County District Judge James Stecker ultimately found Kindt guilty of murder. Along with the murder charge, the judge also found Kindt guilty of three firearm counts, two child abuse counts, and one count each of burglary, tampering with a witness, terroristic threats, domestic violence, and violating a protection order, according to the reports from KOLN.

Kindt was sentenced on May 12, 2025. The judge sentenced him to a minimum of 88 years and six months in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment.

The sentencing was part of three separate cases related to the abuse and murder of Hagen. After Kindt’s sentence was announced, the stepmother of the victim praised the outcome. “Eighty-eight and a half years”, she said. “He’ll never see the light of day or freedom ever again. Justice served. It is enough,” she said.

Background

Hagen was killed on the night of February 8, 2025. At the time, Kindt broke into her home and shot her. He allegedly planned to die by suicide but survived his injuries. He exited the home but was stopped by Nebraska State Patrol after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance.

One of Hagen’s children was at the home and made the initial 911 call when Kindt broke in. The child was not injured, according to authorities.

Hagen had previously been issued a protective order against Kindt after they broke up, according to Law&Crime. She filed for the order two days after Kindt assaulted her and threatened her and one of her daughters in December 2024.

During the earlier incident, Kindt shoved Hagen into the shelving, doors, and walls. He was later arrested and released on bond.

After his release, Kindt contacted Hagen through an intermediary on January 4, 2025. Hagen provided the messages to the police, and Kindt was arrested again for violating the protection order. However, Kindt posted a $75,000 bond on February 7, 2025, and shot Hagen one day later.
